Summary

Repositories and digital newspaper libraries have allowed democratic access to large numbers of historical records which, in many cases, hold great value for researchers as well as for the general public. However, the use of this access is only apparent as the huge number of documents available makes it impossible to read them directly, while the poor quality of the most commonly used search engines makes it difficult for users to find relevant press news.

In this case study we try to solve these issues by developing innovative technology which is able to select documents using certain predefined user fields, thereby identifying a relatively small set of press news that really adjusts to the specific search criteria. In order to evaluate how well it works, we will display the results obtained by applying this method to find a series of industrial heritage elements selected by the Science and Technology Museum of Terrassa.
